Artist Statement
My imagery and color are drawn from natural and botanical elements. I use this inspiration as a vehicle to explore the formal tradition of painting. I am also highly interested in the atmosphere that exists around things and how air is affected by movement. In my paintings atmosphere exists as the main subject matter. It controls, distorts and abstracts the weight of the objects in the paintings.

In my paintings I try to work with elements of color and form that are readable and recognizable as well as application that reminds us that what we are experiencing when we look at a painting is artificial. My hope is that the environment I create is one of a non-specific memory with an articulated sense of emotion. Everywhere I paint is nowhere in particular, but rather a projected ideal or a feeling of where something ought to be or the atmosphere in which something might exist.

I hope that viewers come away from the image with an understanding of my relationship with paint as a medium. Process is inextricably tied to my content. I never know what the finished product will look like when I begin a painting. I start with a high viscosity colored ground which I select based on the mood that I want to create. Next I make gestures so that the brushwork supports that same feeling. My paintings are a series of actions and reactions. Natural images occur because of my formal training as a landscape painter. Once I have filled the canvas I go back in and edit what I have done until I feel that a harmony exists and the painting is a cohesive story.
